Dryer Vent Cleaning FAQ — Houston, TX
Common questions from homeowners in Houston and the surrounding area. If your question isn't here, call us and we'll give you a straight answer.
How often does a dryer vent in Houston actually need to be cleared?
Once a year suits most households here. The reason is humidity: dew points sit in the 70s for months, and damp lint packs into the duct instead of drifting out of it. Families doing laundry most days, homes with pets, or anyone whose dryer sits far from an exterior wall should plan on a shorter interval. If you run a single load a week in a condo with a four-foot vent run, you can stretch it longer without much risk.

Which warning signs point to a clogged vent?
The clearest one is a load that needs two cycles when it used to need one. Beyond that, the dryer cabinet and the laundry room get noticeably hot, clothes come out damp but smell scorched, or the lint screen holds almost nothing because lint is settling in the duct instead. Go outside while the dryer runs and put your hand near the hood. Weak airflow, or a flap that barely lifts, means the blockage is downstream.

What happens from the time we arrive to the time we leave?
We check airflow at the exterior hood first so there's a before-and-after number. Then the dryer gets pulled out, the transition hose comes off, and we brush the duct with a rotating head on flexible rods, working the full run and pulling debris toward a vacuum. In most Houston homes the duct climbs into the attic, so we often work it from both the laundry end and the roof or wall termination. We reconnect the dryer, clamp the transition, confirm the hood flap moves freely, and retest airflow before packing up.

How long will I need the laundry room free?
A short, direct run on a one-story ranch usually wraps up in under an hour. Two-story subdivision homes outside Beltway 8 run longer because the duct travels up a wall cavity and across the attic before it terminates, and attic access adds time by itself. Heavy packed lint, a crushed section, or a nest inside the duct can push the visit past two hours. We give you a realistic window when we see the setup, not before.

What moves the number on a dryer vent job?
Length and shape of the run do most of it. A bungalow inside the Loop with the dryer against an exterior wall is a short, simple job. A 2000s two-story where the duct runs up a chase and twenty-plus feet through the attic is not. Roof terminations cost more than wall terminations because of the climb and the setup. Adding to it: a nest that has to be removed, a crushed or disconnected section in the attic, flexible foil duct that should be swapped for rigid metal, or a hood with a flap that no longer closes. The estimate is free and we tell you the full price before we touch anything.

How do I know the fault is the duct and not the appliance?
Disconnect the transition hose from the back of the dryer and run a short cycle venting into the room. If the clothes dry at a normal pace, the appliance is fine and the duct is the problem. If drying is still slow with nothing attached, the trouble is inside the machine, usually a heating element, thermal fuse, or a worn blower wheel. We check airflow on both sides so you aren't guessing, and we'll tell you plainly when the fix is an appliance repair instead of a cleaning.

Is there a real difference between metal duct and the flexible kind?
Yes, and it shows up fast in this climate. Smooth rigid metal lets lint ride through; flexible foil and plastic have ridges that catch it, and they sag between supports so moisture pools in the low spots. Gulf humidity turns that trapped lint into a damp mat that no amount of tumbling will clear. We replace flexible runs with rigid metal where the layout allows it, and keep any foil to a short, straight transition behind the dryer with proper clamps.

There's an animal nest in my vent. What do you do about it?
Birds and squirrels get in through hoods with broken or missing flaps, and it's common on older homes around Houston where the termination has sat exposed for years. We open the duct at the closest access point, remove the nest and the packed material by hand and vacuum rather than shoving it deeper, then clean the full run. After that the hood matters more than the cleaning: we install a proper flapper or a pest guard that blocks animals without choking airflow. Screen mesh is not the answer, because it clogs with lint within a season.

My duct runs too far for the dryer to push air. What are my options?
Sometimes the run isn't actually too long, it just has too many elbows, and every turn costs you the same as several feet of straight pipe. The first thing we look at is whether the path can be simplified or the termination moved to a closer wall. On slab-on-grade homes everything goes through the attic, which usually gives us room to reroute. When a shorter path genuinely isn't available, an inline booster fan with a pressure switch is the fix, wired to run with the dryer.

Do you have openings today, and how far out do you drive?
Same-day slots are usually available, and morning calls have the best shot at an afternoon arrival. We cover Houston and the surrounding upper Texas Gulf Coast area, flat coastal prairie roughly 50 miles inland from Galveston Bay at an elevation near sea level. That includes the 1920s-40s bungalows inside the Loop, the 1950s-70s ranch and split-level neighborhoods, and the newer two-story subdivisions outside Beltway 8. Tell us your cross streets and we'll confirm the window on the phone.
